“We welcome the reported agreement reached with California State University system in a lawsuit brought by two Jewish students who alleged that San Francisco State University and the CSU Board of Trustees discriminated against them. We congratulate The Lawfare Project and the Winston and Strawn LLP law firm, which reached a settlement in advance of the trial scheduled for this month,” said Arthur Stark, Chairman and Malcolm Hoenlein, CEO and Executive Vice Chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations.
The agreement calls for many steps, including a very significant affirmation which recognizes that, “to many Jews, Zionism is a very important part of their identity.” It establishes the position of Coordinator of Jewish Student Life, an external review of policies, and an independent investigation of additional complaints.
“We congratulate all of those who helped bring about this important settlement and which will certainly be read carefully by university presidents and administrators across the country. It sets a standard for protecting the rights of students and fair and equitable treatment. In too many instances in recent times, Jewish and other pro-Israel students have found their rights compromised and events disrupted, often in the face of indifference on the part of university administration, faculty, and trustees. We hope this will usher in an era of greater tolerance that will allow Jewish students the opportunity for uncompromised expression as afforded to all members of the campus community.”
