. . . Arthur Stark, Chairman, and Malcolm Hoenlein, Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, issued the following statement:
“We welcome the announcement of the establishment of the New York Police Department’s Racially and Ethnically Motivated Extremism (REME) unit. It will further advance the ongoing efforts against antisemitism and all forms of racism. The NYPD has been at the forefront of these efforts and has been responsive to the needs of religious and ethnic communities in New York. The REME unit will take a proactive approach in monitoring extremism so that preemptive action can be taken to anticipate and prevent bias incidents.
Following the horrific Jersey City shooting this week at a kosher food store which claimed four innocent lives, it has become increasingly clear that the alarming rise in attacks against Jews and others will require coordinated action from all sectors of government and society.”
