. . . Dianne Lob, Chair, William Daroff, CEO, and Malcolm Hoenlein, Vice Chair of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, issued the following statement:
“We join the nation today in mourning the loss of former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, one of the last proverbial giants of the Senate and an undeniable mensch, whose political acumen helped guide the country forward during his more than two decades of public service.
“Senator Reid was a tremendous advocate on behalf of the American Jewish community and was especially involved with strengthening ties between Israel and the United States. He was instrumental in the adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism by the White House in 2019 and was a fierce proponent of the Antisemitism Awareness Act and similar efforts to combat antisemitism both before and long after his tenure in Congress.
“With the passing of Senator Bob Dole at the beginning of the month, we are especially reminded of the now bygone era of bipartisan cooperation, political civility, and decorum, which both leaders espoused.
“May his memory forever be for a blessing and continue to provide us with reassuring direction in these challenging times.”
