Friday, August 29, 2014, New York, NY… Robert G. Sugarman, Chairman, and Malcolm Hoenlein, Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations welcomed today’s statement by the National Security Council that as the United States continues negotiations with Iran, the Departments of Treasury and State have imposed sanctions on several companies and individuals engaged in activities such as assistance to Iran’s nuclear program, support for terrorism, or aiding Iran’s evasion of international sanctions.
“It is imperative to keep pressure on Iran if talks are to come to a successful conclusion,” Mr. Sugarman and Mr. Hoenlein said. “Statements by Supreme Leader Ayatolla Ali Hosseini Khamenei and other Iran officials in recent days stressed their intention to maintain or increase uranium enrichment levels and to maintain all aspects of their nuclear program. This action by the Department of State and Treasury will put companies and individuals on notice and block assistance to Iran’s nuclear and terror activities or avoidance of sanctions,” they added.
The Conference of Presidents’ National Task Force on Iran, headed by former Senator Joseph Lieberman, has underscored the need for concerted actions of this kind and we hope that European countries and others will follow the United States’ lead.
