. . . Dianne Lob, Chair, William Daroff, CEO, and Malcolm Hoenlein, Vice Chair of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, issued the following statement:
We are concerned by the decision of Greece’s Hellenic Council of State that eliminated the possibility for Jewish and Muslim communities to comply with religious requirements (shechita) necessary for kosher and halal meat.
The availability of kosher food is of existential importance to Jewish communities; without access to this essential component of Jewish life, communities will not be able to survive and thrive.
The Council of State, which is Greece’s Supreme Administrative Court, is challenging Jewish freedom of religious practice and creating an impossible barrier to maintaining one of the world’s oldest Jewish communities outside of the land of Israel. We are hopeful that the Greek government will quickly remedy this judicial overreach and work to protect the religious rights of Greece’s minorities.
