New York, NY . . . Arthur Stark, Chairman and Malcolm Hoenlein, Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations today expressed deep concern at the announcement that the Palestinian Authority will lead the biggest bloc of developing countries at the United Nations, known as the G77.
The G77 was formed in 1964 and now represents over 80 percent of the world’s population. The group often speaks with one voice in the General Assembly, representing some 130 countries. The Palestinian Authority was granted observer state status in 2012, making them eligible for membership in the International Criminal Court, UNESCO and other United Nation bodies, but they are not able to vote on any General Assembly resolutions.
“It is completely inappropriate for a non-member state to preside over the G77. What was once a group created to facilitate the economic advancement of underdeveloped nations will now be a platform for distortion and incitement, augmenting the well-documented anti-Israel bias in the UN. This bloc helps assure the anti-Israel majority in the General Assembly.”
