Conference of Presidents Leaders Condemn Syrian Regime Chemical Weapons Attack and Call on International Community to Act

New York, NY. . . Stephen M. Greenberg, Chairman and Malcolm Hoenlein, Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations today strongly condemned the Syrian regime for perpetrating yet another inhumane chemical weapons attack against its own civilian population and urged support from the international community to protect the Syrian people from the ruthless crimes committed by the regime of President Assad.

“The grotesque inhumanity of the Assad regime and its allies, particularly Iran and militia groups it controls, knows no bounds.

The world cannot stand idly by while these forces continue to perpetrate atrocities against innocent civilian Syrian children, women and men.

We welcome the initiative led by the U.S. and France urge the Security Council to take decisive and meaningful action to protect the victims of Syria’s latest chemical weapons attack on its own civilian population and to establish an effective international mechanism to investigate these despicable crimes and those who are responsible for ordering and carrying these outrageous acts must be held to account.

The urgency of stopping the ongoing war crimes in Syria is compounded by Iran’s continuing efforts to entrench a permanent military presence in Syria and supporting tens of thousands of members of Shi’ite militia groups in the country, creating a direct route for the deployment of highly advanced missiles and other arms through Syria, to Hezbollah in Lebanon and to other proxies in the region, which increases the threat to the national security of the U.S., Israel and other friends and allies in the region.”
