Conference of Presidents Leaders Commend President Trump for Calling on World Leaders to Stop the Global Threats From North Korea and Iran and End Abuses of UN Processes

New York, NY . . .  Leaders of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations commended President Donald J. Trump’s direct challenge to world leaders to effectively use the United Nations to confront the global threats from North Korea and Iran, in his first address to the United Nations.

Conference of Presidents Chairman, Stephen M. Greenberg, and Executive Vice Chairman/CEO, Malcolm Hoenlein, issued the following statement:

“In his first speech to the United Nations General Assembly, President Trump asserted American leadership in forcefully laying out the case for world leaders to join together in taking decisive action to end the increasingly ominous threats of nuclear aggression from North Korea and the impunity of Iran’s reckless destabilizing support for terrorism in the Middle East and beyond, in the context of its desire to become a nuclear armed state.

We agree with the President’s declaration that ‘We cannot let a murderous regime continue these destabilizing activities while building dangerous missiles, and we cannot abide by an agreement if it provides cover for the eventual construction of a nuclear program.’

We commend the president for making a strong case for a more robust UN role in ending these threats and we support his call for the international community to ‘. . . work together and confront together those who threaten us with chaos, turmoil and terror.’

President Trump specifically pointed to overt Iranian threats to the security of the United States, to destroy Israel, and to undermine the regimes of other countries in the Middle East, including Iran’s support for terror organizations such as Hezbollah in presenting a clear challenge to the world leaders to join with the U.S. to ensure both North Korea and Iran to end their hostile behaviors.

We appreciate President Trump’s specifically calling for reform of the UN bureaucracy and noting the absurdity of having gross violators of human rights sitting on the UN Human Rights Council and abusing the purpose it is meant to serve.

As President Trump noted, ‘When decent people and nations become bystanders to history, the forces of destruction only gather power and strength.’

We hope responsible world leaders will heed President Trump’s spirited call for united action to defeat the forces of those putting the world at grave risk.”
