…Dianne Lob, Chair, William Daroff, CEO, and Malcolm Hoenlein, Vice Chair, of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, issued the following statement:
“The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations commends Israel Prime Minister Naftali Bennett for flying to Moscow yesterday to meet with President Vladimir Putin in an effort to mediate the Russian-Ukrainian military and humanitarian crisis. We are proud of Israel for being brought in to negotiate by both Moscow and Kyiv. Prime Minister Bennett spoke three times afterwards with Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Zelensky, as well as with French Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron. He also met in Berlin with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, before returning to Israel.
“As the Prime Minister stated at Israel’s Cabinet Meeting this morning: ‘Even if the chance is not great — as soon as there is even a small opening, and we have access to all sides and the capability — I see this as our moral obligation to make every effort. As long as the candle is burning, we must make an effort and perhaps it will yet be possible to act.’
“In conducting his shuttle diplomacy, Prime Minister Bennett demonstrated Israel’s desire and core Jewish principle, to show humanitarian compassion – rachmanut – for the millions of Ukrainians, Jews and non-Jews alike, who are victim to the fighting, including over 1.5 million refugees.
“We join him and the world community in praying for a swift and peaceful end to the conflict.”
