Jewish Leaders Commend Planned Immigration of Ethiopian Jews to Israel

. . . Dianne Lob, Chair, William Daroff, CEO, and Malcolm Hoenlein, Vice Chair of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, issued the following statement:

“We commend the Israeli government’s decision to allow 3,000 Jewish Ethiopian refugees to reunite safely with their parents, children, and siblings in Israel. The new agreement expands on the 2015 government resolution that affirmed the right of thousands of Ethiopian Jews to return to Israel under existing family reunification laws. However, as the Israeli government processes and evaluates additional immigration claims, thousands of individuals and families remain in immediate danger amidst the ongoing civil war in the Tigray region.

“Israel must remain a sanctuary for all Jews around the world and maintain its commitment to protect and defend the entire Jewish diaspora wherever and whenever threatened. We call on the government to accommodate the expedited immigration and absorption of the remaining verified Ethiopian descendants of Jews.”
