Jewish Leaders Welcome Senator Schumers Call To Remove Schabas as Head of UN Human Rights Council Investigation of Gaza Conflict

Friday, August 15, 2014, New York, NY… Conference of Presidents leaders, Robert G. Sugarman, Chairman, and Malcolm Hoenlein, Executive Vice Chairman, Applauded the call by Senator Charles Schumer on the UNHCR to remove William Schabas as the head of the commissioner of investigation of the war in Gaza. Citing his numerous anti-Israel comments, Senator Schumer wrote to the United States UN Ambassador Samantha Powers asserting that Schabas should be removed or otherwise the US should move to defund 1.5 million contributes to the UNHCR and also cease its participation in it (The 1.5 million represents the United State’s share of the budget of the UN Human Rights Council.) .”

The Jewish leaders noted that they had raised these concerns with Secretary General Ban ki-moon noting the biases he brings therefore negating any respect for the commission and its findings. We hope that the House and Senate will join and follow Senator Schumers lead in communicating their opposition to Schabas having a continuing role in any investigation of the Gaza conflict.
