Jewish Leaders urge Congress to pass Iron Dome funding

. . . Dianne Lob, Chair, William Daroff, CEO, and Malcolm Hoenlein, Vice Chair of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, issued the following statement:

“We are disappointed that a few fringe members of Congress, who are virulently hostile to Israel, took advantage of the unique anomaly of the potential upcoming government shutdown to remove funding for Israel’s Iron Dome anti-missile defense system from the House of Representatives Continuing Resolution earlier this week.

We are thankful that Congressional leaders, after hearing broad support for the technology developed by the U.S. and Israel, introduced stand-alone Iron Dome funding, which will likely be subject to a floor vote today. The leadership and the vast majority of Members of Congress understand the vital importance of Iron Dome, the purpose for which is to save Israeli and Palestinian lives.

This much-needed funding is vital after Iron Dome batteries were depleted when 4,300 rockets were launched by Hamas in May into Israel. Iron Dome batteries intercepted over 90% of rockets, saving thousands of lives – Jews, Muslims, and Christians – who are threatened by rockets aimed indiscriminately at civilians.

We expect the vote to undoubtedly be a bipartisan supermajority of approval on the House floor today. In funding Iron Dome, Congress will be affirming to the terrorists of Hamas and Hezbollah that America continues to stand by Israel’s right to defend herself.”
