. . . Dianne Lob, Chair, William Daroff, CEO, and Malcolm Hoenlein, Vice Chair of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, issued the following statement:
“We are dismayed by the unilateral decision of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to move forward with the resettlement of Varosha, an abandoned town in disputed territory in Cyprus.
This inflammatory announcement risks setting off tensions between Turkey and Cyprus, which have been in conflict on this issue for decades, and jeopardizes the prospect of a return to negotiations toward a resolution.
We commend the Biden Administration for calling on Turkey to reverse this provocative decision, and we join the growing global rejection of this illegal attempt by Turkey to seize disputed territory. The international community must stand in solidarity with Cyprus.”
