. . . Arthur Stark, Chairman, William Daroff, CEO, and Malcolm Hoenlein, Vice Chair of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, issued the following statement:
“We applaud the adoption of a declaration by the Council of the European Union calling for a coordinated campaign by all member states to combat the scourge of antisemitism. The declaration passed with overwhelming support by a vote of more than 600 in favor and three against, with roughly 60 abstentions.
The declaration calls antisemitism ‘an attack on European values,’ and states that it is the EU member states’ ‘permanent, shared responsibility to actively protect and support Jewish life.’ It recognizes the urgent need for action to be taken, calling for renewed efforts to strengthen the close partnership between Jewish communities and law enforcement, and for those who traffic in antisemitic hate speech online to be punished just the same as those who spread hate in person.
With Jew hatred on the rise in Europe, and around the world, this urgent threat must be confronted by all people of good will, governments, and civil society. We are encouraged by this critically important progress, and urge EU members to swiftly implement the policies called for in the declaration to thwart the plague of antisemitism.”
