The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations welcomes the decision of the European Union to formally place the so called “military wing” of the Hezbollah terrorist organization, based in Lebanon, on the EU terrorist entities list.
“We welcome the fact that many countries that had originally expressed reservations have voted to recognize the reality of the true nature of Hezbollah, especially in the aftermath of the attack in Burgas, Bulgaria, attributed to Hezbollah. This attack was but one of countless examples of Hezbollah operatives being involved in attacks in Europe and elsewhere.”
“We agree with those countries, including the US and Canada, which make no distinction between the ‘military’ and ‘political’ wings of this singular terrorist organization. It is imperative that a serious sanctions regime be implemented. In meetings over the past years we have urged this action be taken and thank those countries like the Netherlands, Britain, Bulgaria, Cyprus for their support and the decision of Germany and France to back the initiative.”
“Hezbollah’s role in terrorizing those who oppose them in Lebanon, their active and key role in the war in Syria, and their involvement in a global terrorist network contributed to the EU decision. The Conference of Presidents, as well as a number of its member organizations, has worked diligently meeting with leaders and representatives of European countries, both in their home capitals and in the US and in various international fora. We also appreciate the role of the US and its representatives in advocating for this decision,” said Malcolm Hoenlein, Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations.
