Conference of Presidents Mourns Loss of Former Congresswoman Nita M. Lowey, Z”L

New York, NY – Harriet P. Schleifer, Chair, and William Daroff, CEO, of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, issued the following statement on the passing of former Congresswoman Nita M. Lowey z”l:

Former Congresswoman Nita M. Lowey, z”l, 87, embodied the highest ideals of both the American Jewish community and the American nation. For thirty-two years, she honorably served the Lower Hudson Valley of New York, leaving an indelible mark on American politics. She made history as the first woman to chair the House Appropriations Committee and the first female chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC). For many years, Lowey also led the Appropriations Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs, where she played a pivotal role in shaping U.S. foreign policy and aid.

A steadfast champion of the U.S.-Israel relationship, Lowey was instrumental in advancing key legislation, including the Middle East Partnership for Peace Fund (MEPPA), one of the last bills she championed, which was later named in her honor. A proud Jewish American, she often cited her deep commitment to Tikkun Olam—the Jewish principle of repairing the world—as the guiding force behind her work.

The Conference of Presidents and our member organizations had the great privilege of working alongside her on numerous occasions. She was among the strongest advocates for the U.S.-Israel relationship in Congress, and her leadership, passion, and dedication will be deeply missed. May her memory forever be a blessing. We extend our deepest condolences to her beloved husband, Steve, and the entire Lowey family. May they be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.
