. . . Arthur Stark, Chairman, William Daroff, CEO, and Malcolm Hoenlein, Vice Chair of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, issued the following statement:
“We join the nation and the world in mourning the loss of Former Secretary of State George Shultz, a longtime friend of the Conference and a lifelong advocate for the State of Israel and the Jewish people. He was one of only two Americans to hold four different federal cabinet posts, having served in both the Nixon and Reagan Administrations. His historic tenure as the 60th Secretary of State from 1982-1989 was essential to bringing about the end of the Cold War.
As America’s top diplomat, he was a staunch supporter of the Jewish State and a key ally of the Soviet Jewry movement whose efforts greatly deepened the US-Israel relationship. He worked very closely with us, and had excellent relationships with many of our leaders.
The Conference and the Jewish community owe him a debt of gratitude. The thoughts and prayers of the American Jewish community are with his family during this difficult time. May his memory be for a blessing.”
