New York, NY… Harriet P. Schleifer, Chair, and William C. Daroff, CEO, of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, issued the following statement:
“The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations applauds the U.S. Department of Education for reaching resolution agreements with the University of Michigan and the City University of New York (CUNY) system regarding their failure to adequately address antisemitic discrimination and the creation of a hostile environment for Jewish students under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act.
“These agreements are incredibly important for the thousands of Jewish students on these two campuses. Unfortunately, these two cases represent only the tip of the proverbial iceberg, and there are thousands more college and university students awaiting similar protections across the United States. We look forward to seeing the resolution of dozens of remaining Title VI cases concerning antisemitism.
“We appreciate the attention of Secretary Miguel Cardona, Deputy Secretary Cindy Marten, and Assistant Secretary Catherine Lhamon on these critical issues and for their continuing communication with American Jewish organizations. Additionally, we encourage the Biden Administration and Congress to provide the Department of Education Office of Civil Rights with the resources necessary to properly address antisemitic discrimination at educational institutions across the country.”
