Conference of Presidents Applauds Plan to Open Republic of Suriname Embassy in Jerusalem

New York, NY,… Dianne Lob, Chair, William Daroff, CEO, and Malcolm Hoenlein, Vice Chair, of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, issued the following statement:

“We commend the commitment by the government of the Republic of Suriname to open an embassy in Jerusalem, demonstrating official recognition of Israel’s capital. This act of leadership represents a significant step in growing relations between the Jewish State and South America and will directly connect the community in Suriname to the heart of the Jewish homeland.

“Since 1949 Jerusalem has continuously been the seat of the Israeli government, and for nearly 3,500 years it has been the Jewish capital. It is home to the holiest sites in Judaism and will always be indelibly linked with the destiny of the Jewish people, while also being a symbol of inspiration, tolerance, and respect for all faiths.

“We look forward to seeing this decision fully implemented in the coming weeks and will continue efforts with our international partners, particularly in Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Malawi, and Equatorial Guinea, to encourage other countries to join in recognizing Jerusalem as the rightful capital of Israel, the world’s one and only Jewish State.”
