New York, NY – Harriet P. Schleifer, Chair, and William Daroff, CEO, of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, issued the following statement:
“The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations joins the nation in paying tribute to the late Henry Kissinger, who passed away at the age of 100.
“A formidable scholar, diplomat, and statesman, Dr. Kissinger played a crucial role in shaping America’s foreign policy for over 50 years. He was as unapologetic about his heritage as he was in his dedication to advancing America’s international standing and defending its ideals.”
“As the first Jewish National Security Advisor and Secretary of State, during the Nixon and Ford administrations, Dr. Kissinger broke barriers in a foreign policy establishment that was unwelcoming to Jews.”
“Throughout his time in public service and as a private citizen, Dr. Kissinger worked closely with the Conference of Presidents on issues of great importance to the American Jewish community, including the security of Israel and Middle East peace, and we are grateful.”
“Although his relationship with the Jewish community was tense at times, Dr. Kissinger was instrumental in saving Israel as the architect of America’s emergency Yom Kippur War airlift in 1973, helping the Jewish state survive and prevail against an Egyptian-Syrian onslaught.”
“His subsequent shuttle diplomacy between Jerusalem and Cairo ultimately laid the groundwork for the 1979 Israeli-Egyptian Peace Treaty, which presaged the Abraham Accords years later.”
“The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations joins the nation in remembering the life and legacy of Henry Kissinger, whose contributions to American foreign policy, Israel, and the cause of international stability will never be forgotten.”
“May his memory be for a blessing.”
