New York, NY — Betsy Berns Korn, Chair, and William C. Daroff, CEO, of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, issued the following statement:
We mourn the devastating loss of life in this morning’s indiscriminate shooting at a bus stop near the entrance to Jerusalem, where at least six innocent people were killed and several more were injured. Our hearts are with the victims, their families, and all who are suffering from this cruel act of terror.
While Hamas has not claimed responsibility, its leaders openly “welcomed” the attack. This brutal assault again highlights the destructive role Hamas and its allies play in encouraging and celebrating violence.
The Palestinian Authority’s “pay-to-slay” policy exemplifies this culture of incitement. Despite repeated promises to end the practice, the PA continues to grant lifetime pensions to terrorists’ families. Under this policy, the families of the two terrorists responsible for today’s killings will now receive monthly payments, bankrolled by international aid intended for peace and development. By sustaining this policy, the PA proves its complicity and fuels the cycle of bloodshed.
As we grieve the innocent lives stolen today, we call on the international community to demand an end to this practice. Empty promises are no longer acceptable. Accountability must replace incitement. May the memories of the victims be for a blessing.
