Arthur Stark, Chairman, and Malcolm Hoenlein, Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, issued the following statement:
“The United Nations Human Rights Council has once again demonstrated its warped standards with the election of Venezuela and Libya to the Council. These two countries are amongst the worst violators of human and civil rights yet they get to be included in the international body that was intended to counter such violations. Moreover, they join other members of the Council like Somalia whose record reflects a complete disregard for the principles and practices the Council was meant to strengthen and enforce. The Council consistently devotes an inordinate amount of its time and deliberations to condemnations of the democratic state of Israel. It is no wonder given those who constitute its membership. The addition of Venezuela and Libya does not bode well for the hopes of some reform of the HRC.”
