Conference of Presidents Commends Colombia for Opening Embassy in Jerusalem

New York, NY — Betsy Berns Korn, Chair, and William C. Daroff, CEO, of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, issued the following statement:

“We commend President Abelardo De La Espriella, Colombian Foreign Minister Omar Bula, and the government of Colombia for opening the Colombian Embassy in Jerusalem, Israel’s capital. The embassy opening affirms Jerusalem’s place as the seat of Israel’s government and marks an important step in strengthening ties between the two countries.

“Jerusalem became the seat of Israel’s government in 1949. The historic capital of the Jewish people for nearly 3,500 years, it remains the eternal capital of the State of Israel. For Jews around the world, Colombia’s recognition of Jerusalem carries deep meaning.

“We welcome the broader renewal of ties between Colombia and Israel. We recognize Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar for his sustained efforts to nurture and strengthen this relationship. Closer ties create opportunities for cooperation in security, trade, technology, and innovation, bringing tangible benefits to both countries. Strong partnerships between democratic nations advance stability, prosperity, and peace.

“At a time when too many governments seek to isolate Israel, Colombia’s decision affirms the value of engagement. We hope more nations will follow Colombia’s example by strengthening their ties with Israel and recognizing Jerusalem as its capital.

“The Conference of Presidents will travel to Colombia in December to thank Colombian leaders in person, engage with the government and Jewish community, and build on this renewed partnership.”
