Conference of Presidents Welcomes Panama’s Embrace of IHRA

New York, NY – Harriet P. Schleifer, Chair, and William Daroff, CEO, of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, issued the following statement:
“The Conference of Presidents commends The Republic of Panama for becoming the 42nd country to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) Working Definition of antisemitism.

“The adoption of the IHRA definition by countries and organizations is a critical step in combating Jew hatred. The IHRA definition is the most authoritative and internationally accepted definition of antisemitism.

“Forty-two nations, as well as hundreds of municipalities, academic institutions, NGOs, and other entities, have adopted the IHRA definition of antisemitism – including 51 Conference of Presidents member organizations. In an era of rising antisemitism, we call on other countries and organizations to adopt the IHRA Working Definition to counter this global threat.

“The endorsement of IHRA by the Republic of Panama is a welcome step toward building international consensus toward combating antisemitism. We thank President Laurentino Cortizo and the Panamanian National Assembly for taking action to help combat antisemitism domestically and globally.”
