Jewish Leaders Express Profound Disappointment at Recent Statement by Representative Pramila Jayapal

New York, NY – Harriet P. Schleifer, Chair, and William Daroff, CEO, of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, issued the following statement:

“We express our profound disappointment at the recent anti-Israel comments made by Rep. Pramila Jayapal in Chicago. We strongly condemn her false and outrageous characterization of Israel as a ‘racist state,’ which is evocative of Soviet-era antisemitic tropes attacking Jewish rights to self-determination.

“We also vigorously denounce the planned boycott by a few Representatives of Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s address to a joint session of Congress. Congress must not give comfort to those parroting misguided or bigoted anti-Israel rhetoric, particularly in a time of escalating antisemitism.

“As American Jewish leaders, we find the normalization of false and defamatory attacks on the Jewish homeland highly concerning. We urge members of Congress to refrain from harmful rhetoric and forcefully condemn anti-Israel and anti-Jewish bigotry.”
