Conference of Presidents Commend Ohio for Taking Action on Antisemitism

New York, NY…Dianne Lob, Chair, William Daroff, CEO, and Malcolm Hoenlein, Vice Chair, of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, issued the following statement:

“We applaud Governor Mike DeWine for signing an Executive Order formally adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism, which reflects the broad support that exists for the most authoritative and internationally accepted definition of antisemitism, as well as the widespread view that it is critically important to define antisemitism in order to combat it successfully. The Executive Order augments already existing Anti-Discrimination Policy in State Government by establishing a definition for antisemitic acts. This will provide an important tool for state government to determine antisemitic intent.

This follows Governor DeWine sending a letter to college and university presidents in December urging them to combat antisemitic discrimination on their campuses.

Conference CEO William Daroff added, ‘As someone who has worked with Mike DeWine for over thirty years, I thank him and his team, as well as the grassroots movement of Ohioans who worked with the Governor to craft this Executive Order, including the leaders of Ohio Jewish Communities, the American Jewish Committee, and ADL.’

Twenty-four states, over 30 countries, and hundreds of universities, sports teams and governmental bodies have adopted the IHRA Working Definition as a tool in defining antisemitism.”
