. . . Dianne Lob, Chair, William Daroff, CEO, and Malcolm Hoenlein, Vice Chair of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, issued the following statement:
“We applaud the announcement by Secretary General Luis Almagro that the Organization of American States (OAS) will appoint an envoy for monitoring and combating antisemitism, which follows the OAS’ adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism in 2019.
We commend the OAS, which is made up of 35 countries from across the western hemisphere, for recognizing the reality of the pernicious threat of antisemitism to the Jewish people and will rise to the occasion of fighting to neutralize it. Once appointed, the envoy will work to implement the adoption of the IHRA definition by OAS member states.
Secretary General Almagro made this statement at the American Jewish Committee 2021 Virtual Global Forum, building on years of partnership and collaboration between the OAS and AJC.
The OAS joins the UN, US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, and the EU in establishing senior positions focused on confronting antisemitism. We urge more countries and institutions to do so as the world confronts the increasingly urgent challenge of Jew-hatred.”
