Jacob Stein z”l
Jacob Stein served as Chairman of the Conference of Presidents from February 1972 through February 1974.
Active for fifty years in land development and commercial and industrial construction on Long Island, Mr. Stein served as Special Advisor to the White House under President Reagan; as a member of the US delegation to the United Nations Human Rights Conference in Geneva in 1982; as alternate representative of the US to the United Nations from 1990-1991; as a member of the President’s Task Force on International Private Enterprise; and of the Defense Policy Advisory Committee on Trade.
He was a founder of Temple Israel of Great Neck, and president of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism (USCJ). He served on boards of numerous Jewish agencies.
In 1973, Mr. Stein played a significant role in convincing President Richard Nixon to send urgent military aid to Israel. He also helped promote Jewish-Catholic relations during the papacy of John Paul II.
Mr. Stein passed away in 2012.
