Rabbi Israel Miller z”l
Rabbi Israel Miller served as Chairman of the Conference of Presidents from February 1974 through December 1975.
Rabbi Miller graduated from Yeshiva College and received his ordination from the affiliated Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary. He was was senior executive vice president emeritus of Yeshiva University, which he served for more than twenty years following a 25-year period as rabbi of the Kingsbridge Heights Jewish Center in the Bronx, NY. He also taught applied rabbinics at the Rabbi Elchanan Seminary.
In 1982 Rabbi Miller became president of the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, leading negotiations with German and Austrian officials regarding benefits for victims of the Nazis. He helped obtain hundreds of millions of dollars for the Nazis’ victims and remained active in the role until his death.
He held many communal leadership positions, including chairman, American Jewish Conference on Soviet Jewry; president, Conference of Jewish Material Claims Against Germany and of the Committee for Jewish Claims on Austria; president, Rabbinical Council of America; founding president, American Zionist Federation and chairman of the American Zionist Council; vice-president, National Jewish Welfare Board and of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC); board member of the Jewish Agency and the World Zionist Executive.
Rabbi Miller passed away in 2002.
