Howard Squadron
Howard Squadron served as Chairman of the Conference of Presidents from July 1980 through June 1982.
Mr. Squadron was senior partner in the New York law firm of Squadron, Ellenoff, Plesent & Sheinfeld. He was extensively involved in civic, community, and national affairs. Reflecting his leadership in campaigns to protect individual civil rights and civil liberties, he served as a public member of the US delegation to the Human Rights Commission of the United Nations in Geneva, and led the American Jewish Congress delegation in the 1963 March on Washington. He later served as that organization’s president from 1978 to 1984.
Long active in New York City’s cultural life, Mr. Squadron was the chairman of the City Center 55th Street Theater Foundation, which operates the New York City Center, and was credited with saving the City Center building when it was threatened with demolition. He was also founding president of the International Center of Photography and was a former chairman of the executive committee of the Foundation for the Joffrey Ballet.
Mr. Squadron passed away in 2001.
