New York, NY… Harriet P. Schleifer, Chair, and William Daroff, CEO, of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, issued the following statement on the passing of former Senator Joseph I. Lieberman z”l:
“Former Senator Joseph I. Lieberman z”l, 82, embodied the highest ideals of both the American Jewish community and the American nation. Serving four terms in the U.S. Senate, he made history as the first Jew to run on a major party’s presidential ticket, when in 2000 he was the Democratic Party’s vice presidential nominee. He was a man of faith and a proud Jewish American—a stalwart defender of the state of Israel who could often be seen wearing a kippa. Lieberman also championed bipartisanship and moderation in an age of rising political extremes, crossing the aisle to work on critical legislation, including campaign finance reform and the creation of the Department of Homeland Security. The Conference of Presidents and our member organizations had the great privilege of working with him on countless occasions—no one was a more indefatigable advocate for the U.S.-Israel relationship than he. His memory will forever be a blessing. We pray that his widow, Hadassah, and the entire Lieberman family will be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.”
