Secure Community Network Memo
Overview Israeli warplanes struck scores of Hamas security compounds and military sites in Gaza overnight in response to increased rocket and mortar fire attacks on Israeli border towns. Reports indicate that at least 150 people have been killed and 300 injured in the airstrikes. Israeli officials have stated that the operation will last as long as necessary to put an end to rocket attacks against Israel. In addition, Hamas leadership has warned Israeli officials that Hamas militants could possibly launch suicide attacks against Israel in response to continued military action against Gaza.
Security Implications The rapid escalation of military action and rocket attacks between Israel and the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip will likely contribute to further breakdown in truce talks and add to already deteriorating stability in the Middle East. In addition, the current round of conflict could serve as a trigger event for other terrorist groups, lone wolfs, or sympathizers who rally around the Palestinian Cause to launch an attack against Israeli or Jewish targets.
